What is a Social Security Plan?

Social security is a government program that provides benefits to retired people, workers who have been injured on the job, and their families. The main type of social security benefit available is an income pension. Other types of benefits include survivor's benefits (for spouses or children after the death of a worker) and disability insurance (paid to people who can't work because they've been diagnosed with a long-term illness or injury). A person may also receive old-age assistance (based on the age at which the person retired) or social security income (paid to people who are not yet retirement age).
